Kelan Jones

SCM: Coach Jones what is your background of your coaching in this coaching world.

Coach Jones: I have been coaching for 18 years. I started out as a middle school coach in Garland TX. Then, moved on to be assistant coach with Lakeview Centennial High School where we went to state championship back to back 2010, 2011. I learned a lot under tutelage of Texas High School Hall of fame coach Tony Mauldin. I initial started out on the boy’s side, then moved over to the girls side to became head girls basketball coach at Sunset High School for 5 years.

SCM: You have been at South Oak Cliff High School for how long?

Coach Jones: This is my 3rd year as South Oak Cliff Head Girls Coach.

SCM: What made you take a coaching job where the Girls program has laid dormant since the mid to late 1990’s?

Coach Jones: I took the girls coaching job at SOC because I saw potential and young ladies that had will and desire, but there was no leadership or accountability.

SCM: How did you change the mentality of the girls Basketball players at SOC?

Coach Jones: The way I changed the mentality of my players was to instill disciple, accountability, self-control, integrity, hard work and responsibility of each player. I use the game of basketball as a teaching tool for many of life’s lessons. My quote I use each and every day to them is “Discipline and Dedication, Determines your Destination.

SCM: How were you able to have such success in a historically broken program?

Coach Jones: The way I was able to have immediate success was by showing commitment to my girls. Showing them that I’m all in and willing to do what it takes for them to be successful. By showing them love and accepting them as they are.

SCM: So, for the past two years, what has been your win/loss records for your Varsity squads?

Coach Jones: 2016 my 1st year at SOC we were 22-11, 2017 my 2nd year we were 27-7, 2018 currently we are 22-9. We are back to back 12-0 undefeated District champions in 11-5A, currently 12-5A.

SCM: What do you do to prepare your players on your Freshmen and Junior Varsity squads for Varsity-level play?

Coach Jones: I have been coaching for 18 years. I started out as a middle school coach in Garland TX. Then, moved on to be assistant coach with Lakeview Centennial High School where we went to state championship back to back 2010, 2011. I learned a lot under tutelage of Texas High School Hall of fame coach Tony Mauldin. I initial started out on the boy’s side, then moved over to the girl’s side to became head girls basketball coach at Sunset High School for 5 years.

SCM: Where do you see this year, and future years, going for the SOC Girls Basketball program?

Coach Jones: Our goal for this year is to make it to the regional tournament. I believe we have the pieces in place to reach our goal and beyond. In the very near future, within the next year or two, I see South Oak Cliff winning multiple State Championship. Also, positioning my girls to further their academic career by receiving athletic scholarships.
